Breakage

It seems when one thing goes wrong, everything goes wrong. Last night I was working on a computer that I got for free over the weekend. I’m trying to clean the thing up so it’s usable, but things aren’t going well. I have reinstalled Windows XP now five times. Every time I reinstall it, something else goes wrong.

Currently I think the issue has to do with the computer overheating. After it’s on for a while the computer mysteriously restarts. I have tried about everything I know to remedy this problem. I have upgraded the BIOS (which was a whole adventure in itself), replaced drivers, uninstalled software, reinstalled Windows, and replaced RAM all with no luck.

Since I think it’s overheating, I have tried to install a fan in the computer. However, since it’s a Gateway, they use non-standard parts. What kind of fan can I buy that fits a 90mm by 40mm slot? The processor doesn’t even have a fan, so I’m starting to really think this is the problem.

Besides my computer trouble, my computer chair has broken. I was working on my computer last night and all of the sudden I fell backward. The whole back of the cheap $30 chair snapped off. That will teach me to buy cheap chairs again.

Then after the chair broke I remember that I had to get my Graduation Project in order. This was around 1 A.M. So I spent the next half hour making sure the project was in order.

On top of all that I have an insane amount of homework. I have been spending at least 3-4 hours a day chipping away at the work. Just because this week is an easy week, teachers feel that they must assign more homework. I think I’m starting to regret taking AP Government. Oh yeah, I have to work on the We the People contest also. I almost forgot about that.

I can’t wait until this temporary strong of bad luck / massive amounts of work is over.

Well, Ron, I think you should open up the case and have a table fan blow into it while you have it on. If it does not freeze/randomly restart, it probably is overheating.

What kind of processor is it? I have an old HP Pavilion with a Celery 500 processor and it does not have a CPU fan. Lastly, you should check the video card. If it is not onboard, make sure it is firmly seated and has adequate ventilation. If you can replace it, that would be helpful too. But if it is onboard, then nevermind.

I got the computer issue resolved. It turned out to be a bad stick of RAM, but thanks for the suggestions Wayland.

Now I’m finding the RAM isn’t the problem. The computer is still overheating. I currently have the sides taken off and things are running smoothly, so it looks as if I’ll have to devise a permanent situation. It would be so much easier if Gateway just had standard fan slots instead of the proprietary crap.

Do what I did with one of my machines: cut a hole in the left panel and mount your own fan. I put two in the side of my homemade rig (AMD Duron 1.3GHz), this seems to cool things nicely

If you have the urge to code, run it through Postable and

wrap it up

.
