OSX Does Work on X86

Well, some said it couldn’t be done but today I prove you all wrong. I have successfully installed OSX on a Intel Pentium 4 2.0GHz machine at school. I followed this guide and it was a piece of cake. I didn’t have any problems at all installing it. I have a video of the system booting, if anyone is interested.

The system does run really slow though, because I need to get some modified patches, such as the SSE3 to SSE2 patch. Once those are installed this system will run faster than a PowerPC.

Just playing around with the system really makes me want to go out and buy a Mac. I can tell you right now, forget what Steve Jobs says, installing Mac on X86 is going to help Apple and not hurt them. If Mac OS was available for X86 boxes I would run out a buy a copy today. Yes I said buy; I wouldn’t steal the OS like Steve Jobs thinks everyone will do. Regardless of what Steve decides Apple should do, an Apple computer is in my near future.

Awesome. I have been wanting to do this for so long but I don’t have any empty harddrives lying around my house and I don’t think anyone would let me do it at school unless I convince my computer teacher (he seems to be switching to Macs!)

I can’t wait until they have Intel processor Macs. It would be cool if I could natively run my Windows apps straight on it but then I guess it kills the purpose of OSX.

So what programs can you run on it? I heard you need SSE3 to run some of them. The keyboard and mouse work fine, do they need to be USB or can they be PS/2?

Regarding Windows apps, Steve Jobs did say the Intel Macs would be allowed to duel boot to Windows, so that shouldn’t be a problem.

Regarding the PS/2 / USB issue, I’m running a PS/2 mouse and keyboard without a problem. I don’t know what all the fuss is about, because it runs perfectly for me.

And for SSE3, the processor is an SSE2 so just about any app that comes with the OS doesn’t run. I’m applying the SSE2>SSE3 patch tomorrow and that is suppose to fix it.

    You need the ApplePS2Keyboard.kext.

One Trackback/Pingback

  1. [...] I was doing some work on the OSX X86 box at school today. Since I did the initial DD image install of OSX, about three newer versions have been leaked, all on bootable DVDs. I figured it was time for an upgrade, so that’s what I worked on today. Unfortunately, I didn’t have enough time to finish, and had to shut off the box mid-install. I figured three hours should have been enough time, but the SSE3 to SSE2 emulation must have slowed down the process. [...]
