Monitor Trouble

My CRT monitor has started to act up. What’s happening is when I switch between computers using my KVM switch, or when one of the computers goes into sleep mode, the monitor displays some deep blue scan lines and then does what I call a hard shutdown. The whole screen gets real bright and it quick focuses itself in a the center of the monitor; displaying a very bright bluish-white dot in the center of the screen. Then the monitor finally turns off.

This started occurring yesterday when I unhooked my monitor so I could take one of the many devices between my computer and the monitor with me to David’s house. I don’t think that’s the problem because in my testing I’ve isolated the monitor away from all other devices. I think the monitor is dying but there is a possibility there might be some interference somewhere. Does anyone have any ideas on what this could be?

Regardless, I’m preparing myself for the worst. I’m figuring that sometime in the next few months my monitor is going to die on me, maybe not completely, but at least get distorted in someway. Should that happen I’ll just buy myself a new monitor. Any suggestions on the new monitor? I’m thinking I’ll probably end up getting myself another CRT, however I’m open to purchasing a LCD.

Definitely get LCD. CRT’s are too cumbersome, weigh too much, and generally a piece of crap. Not sure if you saw my post on the matter, but i got this: http://www.jwnrb.com/2006/01/11/new-monitor/. I am very satisified with it.

Can you even buy CRT’s anymore?

I agree with Jonathan. It’s not like you game anyway.

Alright, thanks for the advice. I’ll probably end up getting a 19″ LCD monitor because if I have to spend $200+ for a LCD, I might as well spend the extra $75 for the extra screen space. Now I just hope my monitor can make it until March 22, my birthday.

Thats what’s cool about LCDs. They take up less space–even if you get one bigger as well. And do you even want to drag a huge ass monitor to your room?

I am very satisified with the ViewSonic I own. At work, we use Dell’s. I am not sure who makes them for Dell, but the Cinema Displays are apparently made by LG (and Apple uses LG’s as well). A few of my friends use Samsung’s and they are happy with them too. I would just read reviews and see what people think. I personally don’t like Cnet, but I read it for people’s reviews; not their editorials. Good luck. Let us know what you decide (hopefully before you buy it so we can tell you what we think).

Well this is going to be a long process. I’m not rushing out to get a monitor this moment; I’m just going to wait it out. I’ll be reading reviews and setting money aside, so when the monitor finally does bite the dust I’ll know what to get and it’s not a rush decision.

[...] A while back I told you about my issues with my CRT monitor. Well, I have an update for you, and it’s not looking good. Yesterday while I was using my computer, I heard a loud pop come from inside the monitor. Nothing changed on my screen, so I wasn’t sure exactly what happened. Sometime later that day I need to switch to Windows. While I was switching, I used to have a weird issues with the monitor doing some funky scanning. Well, that didn’t occur at all this time, so I thought maybe the pop corrected my previous issue. Well it did, but at a cost. [...]
