Loose iPod Screw

Last night while syncing my iPod, I noticed a slight rattle coming from inside my iPod. The rattle only occurred when shifting the orientation of the iPod. It sounded almost as if a screw was loose on the inside.

Being the investigative person I am, I pointed my web browser over to iLounge to check out if anyone else had a similar rattle. Through my searches I learned that an iPod rattle is common, and nothing to worry about. I didn’t quite agree. Some people recommended that I send the iPod back to Apple, since it was still under warranty, but I didn’t feel like waiting three weeks only to get someone else’s refurbished iPod. So, despite what everyone said on iLounge, I wanted to check out the situation myself.

Today I opened up my iPod and sure enough there was a screw loose on the inside. It took me forever to find out where it came from, but I eventually discovered it came from the dock connector. I screwed it back in, closed the iPod up, and everything was fine. The rattle was gone. The only thing I regret is I now have a dent in the side of my iPod from me jamming in a screw driver to open it up, but my iSkin covers it up nicely. I’d rather have a dent than me constantly wondering what that annoying rattle was.

I had a similar incident when I was younger. I had an SNES controller make a rattling sound and I also didn’t want to ship it out, only because I only had the one controller and didn’t want to part with my system. Or buy a new controller interim. So I opened the controller up and found a loose piece of plastic. I don’t know what it was, nor where it came from. But I think I complained to Nintendo anyways and they gave me a new free controller. I told them I threw the other one away. So I then had a second controller for free. Yay!

I love my iPod i think its great. But a few days after i got it, i noticed that when i changed songs , there was a short pause and i could feel something moving inside of it before the next song would come on. I ignored this. But tonight i shook my ipod and i can hear a rattle inside of it? I am assuming it is the HDD as it only happens when i shake it pretty quick.
Anyone else had this same problem??

Craig, the short pause between track changes and the movement is normal. That’s just the iPod searching for the particular track on the hard drive. You’ll notice it more on shuffle modes or when skipping a number of tracks at once, since the iPod doesn’t have time to build up a cache.

As far as the rattle, that is not normal. Most likely it is a screw or small piece of plastic, both which are harmless. As long as the rattle does not bother you and your iPod continues to work, I would just ignore it. If it bothers you and your iPod is still under warranty, maybe consider having Apple look at it. You can take it to any Apple store and have a genius look it, giving you his or her recommendation right then and there. Other than that, just ignore it and your iPod should be fine.

I took my iPod back to Argos today. They exchanged it but when i got home, this does the same thing exactly i still feel the HDD moving inside and i still hear somthing moving around inside only it sounds stronger than the last time. On the bright side, means all the scratches i made are now removed and i lost the dock connector i now have a new one! Still confused about these clicks though :(

    Thanks for your comment Ronald
