The First Bootable OSx86 10.4.4 DVD

Right now in my hands I hold one of the first bootable OSx86 10.4.4 disks. This disk will allow anyone to install OSx86 on any SSE2 or greater machine. No, this isn’t a hoax; this disk is real.

Within the last four hours a random 10.4.4 DVD patcher turned up on Usenet. Some OSx86ers caught onto this and started downloading it. After giving the shell scripts a thorough look-over, OSx86ers deemed this patcher legit. Once the disk was acknowledged as the real deal, several OSx86ers began testing this DVD out, including me.

Unfortunately the install hasn’t been going one-hundred percent as planned. The installation takes a while to start and while it does complete, 10.4.4 does not boot for some people. A few lucky individuals have got 10.4.4 to boot without trouble. Personally, I’m still waiting for the install to complete

It looks as if within the next day a fully working 10.4.4 bootable disk will be out in the wild. Keep an eye out for it at a torrent site near you. Yes, miracles do come true.

Update: My installation succeeded, although I did have a few minor kext errors. With some quick minor repairs this installation will be up and running in no time.

Interesting. So this is an iso I can burn onto a DVD and install it w/o all the work you went through earlier? For some reason, whenever I see ‘disk’ i think floppy disk, and ‘disc’ for compact disc. dunno just me. not to be a nit picker though.

The majority of bugs you may have noticed have been fixed. In my opinion, just having the latest Safari is worth it. Many of Safari’s extensions only work with the latest version.

  40. 40 cavemonkey50 on Feb 22, 2006 at 4:21 pm:

Alright, I have a lot of questions to answer, so let’s get right to them.

Tacoheadpete: My big question is how compatible are ATI/Nvida graphics cards with 10.4.4? Quartz Extreme and resolution changing work now?

No, no major improvements. Apple has ATI/Nvidia cards working now but only with EFI. So, hacked versions will not be able to take advantage of these new drivers.

drbytes: So.. Excuse me for being daft, but does this mean this will run on any Pentium older than 2001/2002? Since it’s SSE2, does it mean it’ll run on Athlons? -support was added in 2003-
    How about Athlon64’s?

OSx86 will work on any CPU - as long as it has at least SSE2 instructions. The plain ond Athlons don’t have SSE2, but the new 64 ones do.

Rick: Now the real question is if the install will update. If the software updater is not able to sense the processor that is running, the system will stay updated and secure. If not, keeping things up to date will be a task. This should make things interesting.

Software Update works and will even attempt to update to 10.4.5. It’s just 10.4.5 replace several hacked files necessary to run. If we get lucky some updates will work, but I’m guessing Apple will be trying their hardest to make updates to the files we need.

Tadej: I’m wondering about the support of graphic cards myself.. does it support radeon 9600?

9600 is supported, although you’ll be stuck in 1024×768 and have some minor mouse tearing.

Allan: Hi, does using this OS allow you to still play all the games that I play on Windows?

No. Windows apps and Mac apps are not compatible.

Whata: Once this is up and running, does anyone know if like on a Mac you will be able to load OSX on an external drive and boot it on any computer. If that is posible than we can carry our drives and have OSX anywhere all most all computer will be potential Macs!!!

Yes, you can do it. You just have to make sure those computers have at least SSE2 support.

Florui: Hey great ! I recently won a xbox 360 http://www.oh22.net/02/ there . Possible to boot osx from there ?

    No.

drillwows: It would be really handy if dual boot would work (winxp and osx).

You can. You just need a boot loader.

Prateek: So let me get this staright, all i need to install 10.4.4 OSx86 is this disc?

    Bingo!

Someone: Does this release require PAE?

I’m pretty sure it does, but don’t quote me on that.

The patched DVD does not work in VMware, at least according to the random NFO file that comes with the patcher. OSx86 10.4.4 does work in VMware, though. You just need to follow Maxxuss’ original 10.4.4 directions and not use the patched DVD.

I just got the install dvd burnt. I pulled the hdd out of my laptop (Acer Travelmate 4400) and stuck in an older 40 Gb one (with no partitions, just unallocated space) so i could play without accidently deleting my windows.
I loaded from the dvd. It comes to a window with an apple logo and a progress wheel, but then a little error icon (circle with line through) comes up and it stops.

    1) The next time I tried with the -v command and I got the line “IOPCCardBridge : : checkBusIDs invalid sub/cardbus/pci settings of 0×0″ followed by “still waiting for root device”. No go.

About half of the times I try booting from the disk, I immediately get the line “System config file ‘/com.apple.Boot.plist’ not found”.

I have tried several times and I get always end at instance 2 from above. Would you say this is an issue with the compatability (hope not) or an issue with the hdd not being formated, or something else all together?

Well, that’s pretty ignorant. Inflating what prices? The totally unjustified $3000 cost of a Mac that has been around long before the x86 iterations of the OS? Or do you mean those of us who own Macs, and have legitimately purchased OS X, but would just much prefer to run it on our much more powerful x86 based machines? I am sick of trying to run OS X through PearPC at molasses speeds. And I am sick of ignoranmuses who claim to have some idea what they’re talking about yet really have no clue. There is no evidence that the project to unlock x86 OS X to other machines has hurt Apple in anyway or that it has driven up costs. Keep dreaming fan boy. Enjoy your $3000 machine, I hope you like paying a $1500 bonus just for the OS, because the hardware doesn’t justifiably cost that much.

I have the same problem as Edian!
My system boot on the dvd, install everything without any problems.
I also tried the -v and everything seems perfect!
After the installation is done, it reboots and there are the problem.
IF the computer starts with the DVD in… it says: “system config file ‘/com.apple.boot.plist’ not found” and it stucks.
If a reboot without the DVD in, i got a little cursor blinking on the top left and nothing happen! I can’t even press F8 nowhere.
It only works if I leave the dvd in and I want to install again!
Then I can press F8, type -v and ENTER but it will re-install everything.
I have the same problem after !!
    Any solution ?
    Thank you very much!

I thought I have the good one because all the installation worked perfectly!
I was able to repartition my disk, erase with security level 7 (also tried the “zero format” ) and then choose that new formated drive to install, wait about around 30 min for the installation (with all the progress bar).
For me, that means that my dvd is perfectly bootable!
But it just doesn’t start Mac OSx after !!

Same thing, I going to download it again and make sure it’s 10.4.5, the weird thing it’s that the 10.4.3 works fine, maybe I need to put attention on the old advice if works don’t fix it!

I’m going to try this over the weekend on my custom Athlon64 3000/2GB RAM/Geforce 6800/Nforce 3 chipset. I’ll get the 10.4.5 DVD and start with that, then if that doesn’t work try the Maxxuss steps.

    A few questions:
I would like to install this on an external USB2.0 HD. Is that possible from the OS X installer? I run windows primarily and don’t want to screw anything up. I can also move the HD internal and install to that, but will I have to disconnect all my other drives or is the installer smart enough to only affect the installed drive?

Where does OS X write it’s boot code? Will it overwrite other bootloaders?

If nVidia graphics cards aren’t supported, doesn’t the OS run sluggishly without the Quartz optimizations?

    Thanks.

  82. 82 cavemonkey50 on Mar 24, 2006 at 2:10 pm:

Absolut, regarding the USB hard drive, it depends on your PC’s BIOS. If you can boot from a USB device you should be able to do it.

Now, regarding the no QE/CI, if your system is fast enough you won’t have a problem. From the specs you gave me, it appears that you’ll be running a little slow, but it should be bearable.

Ok, I wanna make sure I do it the right way !
I saw an installation tutorial and it is REALLY not what I ve done !
I use a Compaq D51S P4 1.8, 256mo RAM (not the best computer but I should be able to install anyway!!)
I don t have any OS on right now.
I burnt the dvd from MY computer (not the one I m testing on).
Boot on the dvd I burnt directly, and it boots up.
The MAC os installation starts, I format my drive completly with the 7 check sécurity (something like that) with only 1 partition.
Then close the “disk utility” and choose the drive I just formated.
It take like 30-40mins to install, and then it is like I wrote before!

    - If I boot with the DVD bootable in, and I don’t click on nothing, it says “/com.apple.boot.plist not found”.
-Boot with the DVD bootable in, but click on F8, it starts with the BOOT: option.
What ever I tip it restarts the installation. not what I want!
-Boot without any DVD in, it stucks at the begining with a blinking cursor on the top left. I can’t do anything, not even press F8 !!

I m downloading it again but I m pretty sure it will do the same as the dvd is OK, I have been able to install it so…

    Any solution ?

There’s nothing wrong with posting the website of patches made to bypass digital preventions of interoerability. The DMCA explicitly states this and makes an exception for it. Only if the patch provides a means for breaking copyright law is it illegal. None of these patches do that. You can legally buy a Tiger disc and legally patch it–end of discussion. Posting links to legal websites attempting to break down the same habits courts found unjust in Microsoft policy is hardly wrong, and certainly not illegal. Be more careful and don’t be scared by companies trying to throw their weight around because they don’t like your activities. Know your s**t, and tell them what’s up, if they try to stop you.

You’ll need to create a HFS+ partition. You need to do that through the OS X installer unless you’re running some special partitioning software on Linux. As long as you have a free partition setup, installing OS X on it will work just fine. Your existing SuSe bootloader should handle the OS X partition selection flawlessly.

In the OSx86 installer open up the Disk Utility application from the menu on the top. Select the partition you want to install it to and format it using HFS+. Now when OSx86 prompts you, you should have an partition available for installation.

Thats what I went into before but it didn’t list the unallocated partitian I wanted to install to. So…. I created a partitian for OSx86 to install to so it could recognize it. When I highlight the partitian (Fat32 to be recognized) and the options it gave me was: First Aid-Erase-Raid-Restore. When I highlighted the entire 160GB hard drive which included all the partitians it then gave me the partitian option. When I click on the partitian option it then lists the different partitians (Yes!) When I click on the Mac OS X partitian I want partitianed and I click the partitian button, it warns me my entire hard drive will loose all its information including all partitians ? Whats the deal here. Why won’t it allow me to partitian just one of my partitians. And there isn’t any options for HFS+ only OS X journeled (not journeled)

  103. 103 MacDrive 6 and HFS+ ? on Apr 9, 2006 at 12:00 am:

Installed MacDrive 6 with all the updates and in reading the help files I run into this:
“You cannot use MacDrive Disk Manager to add a Mac partition to a PC-partitioned disk. Using MacDrive Disk Manager on a PC-partitioned disk will destroy all PC partitions.

You can’t use MacDrive Disk Manager to resize a partition and retain the contents. The only way to resize a partition is to delete and recreate it at a different size, which will result in the loss of any files in the original partition.” So I’m working on trying to understand if this will or won’t partitian one of my partitians. There has got to be an easier way to set up a partitian on my PC to install OSx86. This is getting ridiculous.

  104. 104 Finally got partitian on Apr 11, 2006 at 12:38 pm:

used XP diskpart utility from run command.
    http://wiki.osx86project.org/wiki/index.php/Install_On_A_Partition_Simple_And_Accurate
After creating the partitian I then booted into my OSx86 10.4.4 DVD and disk utility. I then had to delete the OSx86 I just created and then partitian that hard drive to install. Now I have to figure out how to boot into OSx86 from XP?

Just to check it out, I installed it from this dvd, i bought at Pantip Plaza in Bangkok ;o) , it took 7 hours to ionstall but it runs fine, there is this thing with the double booth, you need spf2 on diskette, try that later. to run OSX nect to XP.
    There re a few things
    1. IT DOESN’T FIND MY ETHERNET ADAPTER- SO NO INTERNET
    2. THE VIDEOCARD IS ONLY POSSIBLE IN 1024X786 MODE, no more options
    3. BOOTUP TAKES A LONG TIME, AND LOOKS LIKE LINUX

    but it runs
when i got these things fixed then i make a nice clone.
AND GET BACK INTO MY MACBOOK

    CHEERS

  106. 106 Morisisiz on Apr 23, 2006 at 12:00 am:

    Oh by the way
you dont need to format your partition, or anything
while OSX installer is running just goto the menu UTILITIES
and format it from there directly into MAC OSX journaled
Perfect!! And then this harddrive will show up as a possible to install to
    EASY DOES IT

  107. 107 Morisisiz on Apr 23, 2006 at 12:07 am:

In my opinion you don’t need to make a virtual drive
just make another partition on your hard disk with Partition magic
or in windows-> rightclick: my computer > menage
    etc.
You only need this dvd, or you doing something wrong.

I fully support the OSX86 project. Mac hardware is overpriced. Perhaps I have an anarchistic cyberpunk ideal that some may consider unrealistic, but the advantages of technology authorized or unauthorized are gifts to those intelligent enough to reap the benefits. The type of user that this kind of “cross-platform” engineering attracts still amounts to hobbyists regardless of the fact that the disc is bootable.

Steve Jobs is not going to “get real” about the prospect of OS X on WinTel machines. Apple’s market enjoys the hardware designs, software integration, and software support. Not a fanboy. Just a satisfied customer who can see the value on both sides of the fence.

This is my third Mac and it’s only just come out of it’s Applecare period and now hardware faults are occuring, AGAIN. Both of my previous machines died just out of warranty, one caught on fire!

So can I AFFORD to keep buying expensive hardware? No I don’t think so, paying more is NOT giving me more quality apart from the 1st class OS X experience. After my Mac mini finally dies, I think I’ll be coming here and installing OS X on a generic PC laptop, I should get more than 13 months usage from it, if not I can replace a PC much more quickly than a ‘real’ Mac (which to be honest, since the transition to Intel, is now just a fancy PC in a Mac case anyway)

I have been reading all the posts on this site and quite frankly I am suprised at how far behind you guys are in getting OS X running on your x86 systems. I have had OS X running on my system, HP Pavillion zd8230us, ATI Mobility X600, DVD R- Rx Dual layer, Full QE & CI working as well as OpenGL. Full switchable resolutions 1440×900, for about 2 months now. I am quad booting Vista, XP, OS X 10.4.7 and Linux Mepis. All of these are working flawlessly and I must say that OS X is the fastest out of them all. It is my OS of choice. Xbench is faster than a Mac overall it comes in at 108. So I don’t think I will be buying a Mac any time soon as my Hacintosh is a much better performer.

Oh and by the way updates do work as long as you don’t do the system updates, all the others work.

Can someone give me a stats/comparisons chart that would show what PC rig you have w/ Mac OSX 10.xx.. and compare it’s speed & performance with a real Mac–G4, @ x MHz & x Ram?

  121. 121 cavemonkey50 on Aug 5, 2006 at 3:24 pm:

k-Dalz, Mac on a PC will run as fast as a real Mac using comparable hardware. The only things that could slow you down are if your graphics card does not support Core Image or Quartz Extreme, or your processor does not handle SSE3 instructions.

I’ve installed the MAC OSX 10.4.3 on my dell c840 and it works faster than XP pro with only 256mb Ram, but I can’t seem to be able to install some software on it. I’ll try the new Patched DVD 10.4.4 and see if that works! Does this have rosseta on X11 app because that’s not working right

i am an avid mac user, ive had about 10 macs in the last 15 years, and i have to agree the prices of apple hardware has gotten way out of hand. i currently own a second gen G5, and i cant afford a new mac pro and the required software updates. ie photoshop, illustrator, finalcut etc. on the other side of the fence ive had only 3 atx pc cases in the same amount of time because i only have to change the hardware to get a better machine. yes i would love to run osx on my x86 box, i would jump at the chance to build a 8 core intel box for half the price of an apple box.

Well, I have a problem with installing that too. I have 10.4.6 x86 install DVD. I put it into my machine, trying to boot from this.
Then gray screen with Apple logo appears, a spinning line on the bottom of the screen says that installator is being loaded. But then, an error icon apperas. (a circle with a line through) and loading stops. Do you have any ideas, what could I do?

  133. 133 dan on Jun 7, 2007 at 8:13 pm:

Keith: What are you talking about … Apple use the very same components every other manufacturer use, all iBooks starting with QT are made in the same plants as Dell Latitudes, their just contracted out to the cheapest manufacturer in asia. The big difference is ibooks and powerbooks are pretty and have one mouse button. The screen is made by samsung, the disks are made by Toshiba, the graphics card is made by nVidia ? Whats so special about this hardware with an apple badge stuck on it ?

NEWSFLASH IBOOKS AND POWERBOOKS DONT RUN OFF INTEL - THEY RUN OFF PPC. ALSO APPLES GRAPHICS CARDS ARE MADE BY INTEL (FOR MACBOOK) and the apple laptops have right click built into the touchpad….. who uses buttons….this is the 21st century… where touch sensitive hardware is used.

the special thing is that the OS is specifically designd to run off apples custom mainboards, and the hardware attatched in the perfect combination for computing excellence.

thats the difference shitbag. now go buy a dell dimension and piss off back 2 windows vista.

  134. 134 dan on Jun 7, 2007 at 8:15 pm:

oh and what does the plants have to do with the manufactured products. Creative ZEN’s are made in the same factory as nokia mobile phone chargers - where’s the similarity there?

  135. 135 Amit on Jun 28, 2007 at 4:02 pm:

I downloaded the torrent for the mac osx dvd patched.
And i burned that iso to a DVD.
And it booted fine on my PC.
But this setup is taking awhile to run.
It currently shows an apple logo, with a loading circle on the bottom.
I don’t know if it will work for sure, but its taking very long, anyone else getting this problem?

  136. 136 Shane on Jul 2, 2007 at 1:50 am:

Jonathan: Interesting. So this is an iso I can burn onto a DVD and install it w/o all the work you went through earlier? For some reason, whenever I see ‘disk’ i think floppy disk, and ‘disc’ for compact disc. dunno just me. not to be a nit picker though.

    I think the same thing!

  142. 142 Peter on Aug 15, 2007 at 2:56 am:

would this installation be more easier to success if using Mac OS X?

  143. 143 Bitter on Aug 25, 2007 at 8:57 am:

My plan is to Quad Boot:
    Windows Vista
    Windows XP
    Ubuntu 7.04
    and Mac OS X

I have the first three set up and working perfectly,
But when coming to installing OS X I get:
    /com.Apple.boot.plist Not Found
    on booting the install DVD.

Running through VMware works upto a certain point,
    then the virtual machine crashes.

I have had bad experience with VMware in the past,
and would much rather a straight forward solution,
any help would be greatly appreciated.
