The First Bootable OSx86 10.4.4 DVD

Right now in my hands I hold one of the first bootable OSx86 10.4.4 disks. This disk will allow anyone to install OSx86 on any SSE2 or greater machine. No, this isn’t a hoax; this disk is real.

Within the last four hours a random 10.4.4 DVD patcher turned up on Usenet. Some OSx86ers caught onto this and started downloading it. After giving the shell scripts a thorough look-over, OSx86ers deemed this patcher legit. Once the disk was acknowledged as the real deal, several OSx86ers began testing this DVD out, including me.

Unfortunately the install hasn’t been going one-hundred percent as planned. The installation takes a while to start and while it does complete, 10.4.4 does not boot for some people. A few lucky individuals have got 10.4.4 to boot without trouble. Personally, I’m still waiting for the install to complete

It looks as if within the next day a fully working 10.4.4 bootable disk will be out in the wild. Keep an eye out for it at a torrent site near you. Yes, miracles do come true.

Update: My installation succeeded, although I did have a few minor kext errors. With some quick minor repairs this installation will be up and running in no time.

Interesting. So this is an iso I can burn onto a DVD and install it w/o all the work you went through earlier? For some reason, whenever I see ‘disk’ i think floppy disk, and ‘disc’ for compact disc. dunno just me. not to be a nit picker though.

The majority of bugs you may have noticed have been fixed. In my opinion, just having the latest Safari is worth it. Many of Safari’s extensions only work with the latest version.

Alright, I have a lot of questions to answer, so let’s get right to them.

Tacoheadpete: My big question is how compatible are ATI/Nvida graphics cards with 10.4.4? Quartz Extreme and resolution changing work now?

No, no major improvements. Apple has ATI/Nvidia cards working now but only with EFI. So, hacked versions will not be able to take advantage of these new drivers.

drbytes: So.. Excuse me for being daft, but does this mean this will run on any Pentium older than 2001/2002? Since it’s SSE2, does it mean it’ll run on Athlons? -support was added in 2003-
    How about Athlon64’s?

OSx86 will work on any CPU - as long as it has at least SSE2 instructions. The plain ond Athlons don’t have SSE2, but the new 64 ones do.

Rick: Now the real question is if the install will update. If the software updater is not able to sense the processor that is running, the system will stay updated and secure. If not, keeping things up to date will be a task. This should make things interesting.

Software Update works and will even attempt to update to 10.4.5. It’s just 10.4.5 replace several hacked files necessary to run. If we get lucky some updates will work, but I’m guessing Apple will be trying their hardest to make updates to the files we need.

Tadej: I’m wondering about the support of graphic cards myself.. does it support radeon 9600?

9600 is supported, although you’ll be stuck in 1024×768 and have some minor mouse tearing.

Allan: Hi, does using this OS allow you to still play all the games that I play on Windows?

No. Windows apps and Mac apps are not compatible.

Whata: Once this is up and running, does anyone know if like on a Mac you will be able to load OSX on an external drive and boot it on any computer. If that is posible than we can carry our drives and have OSX anywhere all most all computer will be potential Macs!!!

Yes, you can do it. You just have to make sure those computers have at least SSE2 support.

Florui: Hey great ! I recently won a xbox 360 http://www.oh22.net/02/ there . Possible to boot osx from there ?

    No.

drillwows: It would be really handy if dual boot would work (winxp and osx).

You can. You just need a boot loader.

Prateek: So let me get this staright, all i need to install 10.4.4 OSx86 is this disc?

    Bingo!

I loaded from the dvd. It comes to a window with an apple logo and a progress wheel, but then a little error icon (circle with line through) comes up and it stops.

    1) The next time I tried with the -v command and I got the line “IOPCCardBridge : : checkBusIDs invalid sub/cardbus/pci settings of 0×0″ followed by “still waiting for root device”. No go.

About half of the times I try booting from the disk, I immediately get the line “System config file ‘/com.apple.Boot.plist’ not found”.

I have tried several times and I get always end at instance 2 from above. Would you say this is an issue with the compatability (hope not) or an issue with the hdd not being formated, or something else all together?

Well, that’s pretty ignorant. Inflating what prices? The totally unjustified $3000 cost of a Mac that has been around long before the x86 iterations of the OS? Or do you mean those of us who own Macs, and have legitimately purchased OS X, but would just much prefer to run it on our much more powerful x86 based machines? I am sick of trying to run OS X through PearPC at molasses speeds. And I am sick of ignoranmuses who claim to have some idea what they’re talking about yet really have no clue. There is no evidence that the project to unlock x86 OS X to other machines has hurt Apple in anyway or that it has driven up costs. Keep dreaming fan boy. Enjoy your $3000 machine, I hope you like paying a $1500 bonus just for the OS, because the hardware doesn’t justifiably cost that much.

Well, you won’t be able to diagnose the exact problem by using the boot DVD. What I would try is repeatedly pressing F8 as you boot the computer. There should be at least a second when you can get the prompt.

msrs cavemonkey and maxxus have tremendous investments in time
spent on this. that must be acknowledged and commended.

to some they are criminals. i’m sure they would not want their intellectual property subject
to the whim of theives. But I can’t view them as such. Were they truly able to be such an influence
upon a world wide market, they would have no use for such pursuits.
that is to say : if apple had
anything to fear from these men and their interests, apple would have little say in it.
the fact is that it is this very kind of spirit that was once present in a little company called apple computers.
i’m glad that someone has inherited that soul.

i am weary from trying to distill the endless bits into a function item of technological curios.
i’ll probably have to “donate” some funds to a stranger in exchange for a disc of the install.
i haven’t the free time to keep searching.
but i thank cave for a little kerosene to toss on a dwindling fire.

I have the same problem as Edian!
My system boot on the dvd, install everything without any problems.
I also tried the -v and everything seems perfect!
After the installation is done, it reboots and there are the problem.
IF the computer starts with the DVD in… it says: “system config file ‘/com.apple.boot.plist’ not found” and it stucks.
If a reboot without the DVD in, i got a little cursor blinking on the top left and nothing happen! I can’t even press F8 nowhere.
It only works if I leave the dvd in and I want to install again!
Then I can press F8, type -v and ENTER but it will re-install everything.
I have the same problem after !!
    Any solution ?
    Thank you very much!

Have you guys tried the 10.4.5 DVD that’s been floating around? It might work a lot better for you than the 10.4.4 DVD.

I thought I have the good one because all the installation worked perfectly!
I was able to repartition my disk, erase with security level 7 (also tried the “zero format” ) and then choose that new formated drive to install, wait about around 30 min for the installation (with all the progress bar).
For me, that means that my dvd is perfectly bootable!
But it just doesn’t start Mac OSx after !!

As I said, I ll try to download again !
    Tkx

Same thing, I going to download it again and make sure it’s 10.4.5, the weird thing it’s that the 10.4.3 works fine, maybe I
