Current RAZR File Transfer Theories

Since I wrote my previous article there have been some significant developments in the Verizon file transfer saga. It now appears that my initial report is wrong. Motorola Phone Tools and OBEX are not working for everyone. If your phone had the previous .02 firmware, the firmware which Verizon accidentally left OBEX on, and you upgrade to .04, you will retain Phone Tools transfer and OBEX. However, if you upgrade from .03, the firmware which Verizon stripped the OBEX code, you will not have file transfer capabilities.

At the moment there is no clear-cut answer to this phenomenon. There are a couple of theories, though. The first theory is that the .04 firmware is not a full firmware package and is simply an update to Verizon’s interface. If this would be the case, any functionality present in the previous firmware would carry over to the new version, thus leaving OBEX intact. The other theory is that Verizon has readded the file transfer code to this new firmware, possibly to be enabled sometime in the future. If this theory is the case, .02 users are retaining OBEX since a seem, a file on the phone which contains configurable settings, is not being overwritten during the firmware flash, thus allowing file transfer to continue to work.

Regardless of which method is the correct one, this is still significant news for phone hackers. What this means is there is a way to enjoy the latest firmware while still maintaining file transfers. Currently it appears you’ll have to downgrade to .02, then take your phone to Verizon for the firmware flash, but in the near future a simple seem edit may be all that’s required.

I am only interested in one thing… does the new firmware actually speed up this turtle of an IU cause i am ready to switch to Cingular alone for the UI in this phone!

Yeah, after the firmware update the UI is as fast as a normal phone.

Still not good enough for me. I really am not pleased with the phone as I expected. I think I will wait until the next Alltel f/w is out and go with that. Personally though, I much rather go with Cingular and stick it out with a GSM network as Mr Smithers mentioned on a previous post.

Sure, you would just follow the same instructions to downgrade to .02 from .04.

Lots of comments about going to Cingular. I just paid the severance fee to leave them. Their service was totally abysmal. The quality of calls was horrible, with frequent dropped calls even in a major metropolitan area in which we live. When I called they found an “issue” they corrected with my account. Thereafter, I couldn’t call my spouse for 4 days. A total mess, my experience with Cingular and I cannot in recommend in good concious that anyone do any business with them.

  44. 44 Mkcflyboy on Nov 29, 2006 at 12:25 am (Quote):

Well I sure you have all heard or experienced the horrors of Verizon, but he is another one. I have had a Motorola Vc for almost a year. The problem started when the phone would not hold a charge for more than 4 hours (in stand-by). When I took it to the local Verizon service center, I was told I needed to buy a new battery. When I questioned if they could at least check the battery before charging me the $33.00, their reply was “no, we no longer have that equipmentâ€?. So (the fool that I am) bought a new battery. After two days I had the same problem. I plugged the charger into an identical phone (which belonged to my friend, on Team Mobile) and it worked flawlessly. This of course eliminated the charger be defective. I again took my phone and new battery back to the service center, only to be brow beaten by a customer service (by that’s a bad play on words) representative. After wasting 90 minutes of my time (this being the second trip), I was told they would just replace the phone. When I questioned the refund of the battery that was purchased without need, I was told, “oh well, I can’t do anything about thatâ€?.

The fastest way to piss me off is to tell me you “can’tâ€? do something. After another 20 minutes of trying to reason with this idiot, she agreed to refund the battery. When she gave me back my new phone, it had no battery in it????? I asked her what I was supposed to do with a phone without a battery. She stated “use your old oneâ€?. I explained (twice) that when I was told my only option was to purchase a new battery, the agent kept my old one, and I have no battery. After she disappeared for another 10 minutes, she brought my new phone out with a battery. Now, I only tell you this to enlighten you on Verizon’s lack of customer service.

After I get the phone home and attempted to check my voice mail, I kept getting a recording that my pin number was not valid. After researching the phone, this young (lady) programmed someone else’s phone number in my phone. There was no quality control in place before the phones are returned to the customer. After further research, I now find I no longer have the ability to use my blue tooth network (DONG) as I had prior to this escapade. It was then I found these article and responses about Verizon disabling the OBEX feature on their phones. I called the service center manager and explained that this is a very important feature to me, and I was sold this feature and purchased this feature when I originally purchased my Motorola V3 phone. I was then told by their tech, that this was done as a “security issueâ€?, because blue tooth is too much in its infancy, and anyone could walk up close to you and download all of your files on your phone????? WHAT???? I explained that I should be able to make the decision if that was a security issue or not, and Verizon should not arbitrarily just take that feature away. I explained I have been a customer of over eight years, and I am ready to cancel my account, and take it to a cellular provider that respects their customer’s time and needs. Not a company that will “TELLâ€? you what they will allow.

So now its three days later and four and a half hours wasted. I was told I could get a micorSD / TransFlash card and card reader/writer to be able to download my pictures, ring tones, and what ever I use to be able to send to my phone. As this seemed like my only option, I did just that. Now I find that was incorrect information as well. Another tech advised me the phone will not read any information that does not have a “licenseâ€? attached to it. Meaning if you didn’t purchase their music, or ring tones, it’s NOT GOING TO WORK!!!!

    Any Ideas??????

Wow that really sucks. Regarding your Bluetooth, I’ve heard you can flash the old firmware onto the newer RAZRs. You’ll loose support for the SD slot, but since you can’t but any non-license stuff onto it, it’s not much use anyway. I’d try giving that a shot.

Moto4lin was written for Linux, which means that it’s both a good example of things the Unixy-goodness of OS X makes possible and a big headache to work with. Start at http://moto4lin.sourceforge.net/wiki/Mac_OS_X; just grab the binary, install the included Qt-Mac, and you can ignore most of that page.

    For configuration,

    1. Plug in your phone
    2. Open terminal and type the following: ls -la /dev
    3. Now scroll up and look for something like cu.usbmodemxxxx (not tty.usbmodemxxx)
    Mine was cu.usbmodem1B11
    5. Now open up Moto4lin and open up preferences
    6. In the top line (ACM device) change the entry to match up for your phone, mine is /dev/cu.usbmodem1B11 for my RAZR and /dev/cu.usbmodem5B141 for my ROKR
    7. Click the Update list button to display all your USB devices

NOTE: Here’s what I found to be the tricky part

    8. The first time you click the button, find your phone and click set as AT Device. Click ok to close the prefs window.
    9. Click the Connect/Disconnect button and it should start to connect and then fail
    10. Open up the preferences again and click the update list button and you will now see a different number for your phone. Click the set as P2k Device button.
Mine was 4902 for AT and 4901 for P2k, odd but it works.

I don’t understand why, but preferences don’t always “stick” in moto4lin; I had to repeat steps 7-10 a couple of times, re-entering the same information each time, before I could get a connection. Eventually, though, the preferences “took” and I haven’t had to reconfigure since the first successful connection.

    —————————————–
    Worked for me right away!

NOW Go have fun and screw corporate “greed”!!!

As I’m sure you’re aware by now, taking your RAZR to a Verizon store for an update to the .04 software will only result in Bluetooth being enabled if you have the original Verizon firmware with Bluetooth enabled already. This is because the software that Verizon stores have is simply a patch. However, there has now been a new firmware file leaked called version .04P. Only a lucky few Verizon stores apparently have this version, so your chances of getting it are slim. Instead, you can download this file somewhere on the internet (I’m not going to help you), and flash it yourself. After the flash you’ll have a fully working Bluetooth phone, regardless of what firmware version you started with. [...]
