I’ve noticed the last couple weeks that I modify just about anything technical I own. I just can’t seem to use technology knowing that it can do more than the manufactures’ intended. So, I thought I would share some of my favorite mods and give you the opportunity to tell me some of your favorite mods.
1. Xbox With Mod Chip
My modified Xbox is certainly my favorite modification I’ve ever done. I installed a Xecuter3 into the box, which not only allows unsigned code, but comes with a great BIOS which allows the alteration of several aspects of the Xbox. Since I can run unsigned code with my Xbox, I have been able to make my Xbox a full fledge media center. I can also play all my favorite old games through emulators, use trainers, and of course play backups.
If you modify your Xbox, be sure to download Xbox Media Center. It’s better than any media center I have ever used.
2. OS X on a Beige Box
If you’re sick of Windows, but don’t have the cash for a Mac yet, OSx86 is the perfect happy medium. I’ve been using my OSx86 box since December and I absolutely love it. While it’s certainly not the easiest mod to do, it’s well worth it when you’re done.
Now this mod has obviously stirred some controversy just about everywhere. So, I’d just like to quickly mention that this is only a tempory mod. I plan on buying an Intel Macbook as soon as Apple starts shipping them out. Once I have my Macbook, my Hackintosh is going to become a Suse box.
3. Linksys Third Party Firmware
Third party firmware for Linksys routers is possible the best and easiest modification you can do to anything. Third party firmware takes your Linksys router and makes it a useful $200+ router. My favorite firmware to get the job done is Thibor’s HyperWRT. HyperWRT not only fixes bugs present in Linksys’ firmware, but it adds great features such as static DHCP, variable transmit power, and the power of scripts; all without losing the wonderful Linksys UI.
Other Mods
The modding doesn’t stop there. I’ve done tons of other mods throughout the years. Some of the more notable mods are (in no particular order):
- Upgraded TiVo Hard Drive
- Flash RAZR to Enable OBEX
- iPod Linux
Your Favorites
Now it’s time to find out your favorite mods. What have you done to your digital devices that not only increases functionality but make the device that much more enjoyable?

I don’t mod, I’m not skilled enough. But I enjoy Sting Maphack for Diablo 2!
I tried to mod my dog and the bitch never stops barking now…..
PS:
(Don’t mod human or living things, outcome of it… they’ll probably bark all day and night bitching, how they are fat and can’t get a job….)
I’d have to agree with the Xbox mod being great. I love my xbox mods, all 3 parts of it… The Mod Chip, the paint job, and the 160 gb HDD
