New Pepper: The Pwn-a-nator

Update: Pwn-a-nator is now available to download. Download link is at the end of the post.

Today I’d like to announce a new Pepper I have in the works for Shaun Inman’s Mint. The Pepper’s name is the Pwn-a-nator, and it’s the perfect Pepper for any ego-loving website owner. The Pepper’s main function is to see if your site pwns your visitors. I do this by several methods.

The first method is through the Newest Unique Referrers. I check each and every referrer URL for the website rating from Alexa. If a Feedburner chicklet is on their website, I also compare their subscriber stats to yours. The second method is through Blog Comments. I parse your commentor’s websites and run them through the same tests as I do for the referrers.

Once I know if your site pwns theirs, their website gets added to the pwnd list in the Pepper. It’s not much to start with, but it’s something. In a future version I’d like to have the ability to add that list to your website and send emails to the pwnd site owner, letting them know your site is better than theirs.

I hope to have this Pepper out in the next few days. Right now I’m just working out some bugs with the Feedburner chicklet. I hope to have those bugs squashed soon, so your site can start pwning others.

I’ve decided to release my early beta version of Pwn-a-nator. I’d like everyone’s feedback if possible. I’m working on calibrating the pwnage meter, and need your opinion on whether the ratings are accurate.

Hey, you might also want to add PageRank checking!

I’m curious: how resource intensive will this pepper be?

Ah, great idea! I’ll add that to the list.

It shouldn’t be too bad. Google’s PageRank, Alexa, and Feedburner all have APIs, so I can grab the opposing website’s statistics easily.

Now a note to all. I plan on having a beta version released later today. It will be missing Feedburner and PageRank, but Alexa should be functional by then.
