Gmail Doesn’t Like HTML

I’m a little pissed right now. Earlier today I read a great Digg article on how to create a CSS email signature. I thought it was cool, so I spent about the last hour or so tweaking my signature to perfection. Here’s what I came up with:

My CSS Signature

Looks great, doesn’t it? Well, I can’t use the signature at all. Apparently Gmail doesn’t support HTML signatures yet. So all that hard work went right down the tubes. I’m not sure who to be more pissed at. Gmail or myself for not thinking to check before I started.

Just thought I’d give a warning to anyone who was thinking of doing the same thing. Also, if anyone has any idea on how to get this signature into my Gmail messages, I’d love to hear it. I know I could use Gmail’s POP3 functionality, but I really like the Gmail interface, so I’d prefer not to do that. Well, disgruntled Gmail user out.

I don’t know how to get that signature into gmail but you can go to settings on gmail and make a new signature.

Didn’t it say in the description that this could be used for Gmail too? Because I almost made one myself, but was too lazy to go ahead with it.

Why don’t you use Apple Mail? It’s wayyyy better than Gmail’s online interface. You can have Gmail archive all the email you download with POP. So you don’t even need to save it on your computer.

Anyway, let me know if you get around this or something.

Yeah, the description mentioned Gmail, but it has since been edited to not mention it.

The main reason I’m not using Apple Mail is I’m a multi-OS user. I use both Windows and Mac and I need my email available in both locations. Maybe if Gmail ever offered IMAP support I could start using Apple Mail.

  1. [...] While I’m no fan of HTML mail, the occasional use is tolerable. If you have to spice up your mail, HTML and CSS is the best way to go. Since not all email clients support HTML mail, CSS offers the ability to degrade to plain text. Not to mention a CSS-based email is much lighter than one filled with tables and other HTML styles.
