I Give You the Wii 360

Late last night Sony revealed their “new” PS3 controller. We all knew they needed a better controller than the boomerang, so this new controller came as no surprise. However, I couldn’t help but notice that it was a complete rip of both Nintendo’s Wii and Microsoft’s Xbox 360.

PS3 Controller

The first thing you’ll notice about the controller is it doesn’t look too much different than a PS2 controller, or PS1 controller for that matter. I guess Sony couldn’t handle one failed design and they decided to play it safe with the Dual Shock. While this isn’t necessarily a bad thing, Sony could have at least made some minor changes to make the controller more comfortable. Microsoft didn’t change too much going to the 360, but they at least made some minor improvements to the overall feel of the controller.

The next thing you’ll notice is Sony ripped a lot of Microsoft’s 360 controller features. Replace the 360 button with a Playstation logo, the ring of light with four LEDs on the top, and a mini USB port for charging with a mini USB port for charging. Given the nature of wireless technology, this functionality was needed in the PS3 controller, however Sony could have at least made an attempt to put its spin on it.

The next rip isn’t noticeable, but you’ll see it as soon as you read Sony’s news from E3. Sony has added motion sensing to the PS3 controller. Now that wouldn’t be so much of a big deal if Nintendo hadn’t announced motion sensing in their controller first. Nintendo was really thinking outside the box when they unveiled the Wii controller. No one was even thinking about motion sensing at the time. I just find it highly suspicious that PS3 will include this technology when their was no mention of it when they unveiled the previous controller. You can bet that Sony would have been making a big deal about that functionality if they thought of it first.

As if the PS3 controller couldn’t suck anymore, it will be lacking rumble technology. Now Sony will tell you that it wasn’t technically feasible, but we all know that isn’t the case. Even the Wii will have rumble, and that has motion sensing and wireless technology built into the controller’s small package. The real reason for Sony’s lack of rumble is it lost a lawsuit against Immersion. See, Sony wasn’t paying licensing fees on the rumble technology, whereas both Nintendo and Microsoft were willing to settle. I guess that’s what you deserve when you take an elitist view of your company, thinking you can win any lawsuit.

So in conclusion, Sony’s “new” PS3 controller really isn’t anything to get excited over. The design will be the same and the functionality will be stolen from competitiors. Combine that with PS3’s starting price tag of $500 and I think you’ve got a real hit. I know I’ll be rushing out on launch day to pick my overpriced Wii 360.

LMAO you do understand the xbox controller (what the 360 controller is based on) is a rip of the PS design. Those coloured buttons werent on a black canvas wasnt a MS concocution.

Stop woith the stealing crap you sound like a fanboy, its business. You take the best of whats available and make it better. When you run a corporate empire youll understand a bit more on how to make money

Rumble disrupts the motion sensor. Anyway i hate rumble.

    Blu-ray=$800
    PS3+blu ray+60GB hard drive=$600

    bargain

Hmm, Barry you sure sound like a Sony fanboy. I’m sure if Microsoft was stealing some innovative PS3 feature you’d be complaining to. That’s all I say on that.

Now regarding PS3 price, you make a good point regarding the Blueray / PS3 comparison, however, I don’t completely agree with it. The PS3 is supposed to be a game console. I shouldn’t be paying for the latest and greatest DVD technology when all I want is a game system. Sure it’s an added bonus, but the PS3 price is certainly affected by it.

I owned a PS2 for 4 years, sold it got an xbox, sold that got a 360 then bought a Cube. So No im not a sony fanboy im just realistic and not part of the anti-sony craze just because theyve outdone everyone.

Put it this way. DVD is no longer the current genformat, thus Sony can either have no movie player in the system and make people buy a seperate player. or go with the lastest technology. If they do the first one there would be too much critizism to handle.

Look at the Wii, that’s only going to have a DVD drive and no one is complaining about that. The 360 also only has a DVD drive. However, in 360’s case there will be an HD-DVD add-on that will retail around $100 - cheaper then a regular HD-DVD player. Sony could have easily gone with that model. Have a cheaper console, then have a Blueray drive as an add-on later for cheaper then a real Blueray drive. That would be the best of both worlds in my opinion.

thats cute and everything asside the fact that nobody owns a blu ray player, theres no logic in it, high def maby but only if you have a hi def plasma screen etc. if its the end of the dvd than why the hell 5 months after your post are dvd’s still dominating the market? also, the ps2 and xbox came out at the same time and are only simular because of the 4 main buttons and 2 analog sticks, the difference is that xbox’s controllers are much more comfortable and have better analog placement.

The only reason the blu-ray player is so expensive in comparison to the PS3 is because sony wants all of the shleps like you to say what a bargain then spend $600 on a grey area system.

    Blu Ray > HD-DVD?!
    AHH HHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH…. HAHAHAHAHAH!

Wow. Man really you should try to educate yourself on the subject at hand… You obviously only believe what sony has said and fail to research anything else. Toshiba (the main company behind HD DVD) is going for compression while Sony is going for sheer size and volume. Now what would you rather want, a 60 gig disc that is going to cost 30 dollars or a disc that can hold 100 GB but only be 20 gigs in size and cost approx. 15 dollars? Also the Blu Ray disc needs to be covered in some powder… so throw on another cost so 40 dollars. And that is just the obvious of all it - the cost to acheive the same things. If you really want to know more head over to After Dawn or any other DVD website where youl see Blu Ray is a joke and treated as such… Blu Ray will be done just like the UMD movie format or whatever it was the PSP used….

I’m not going to come back and check this so don’t bother trying to talk to me I just stumbled across Barry was totally right except the light thing that’s a rip-off of the Wii except the Wii has brail numbers and yeah the Wii and 360 showed their controllers as Sony looked around at E3 and said hey check out these controllers now I know what to make ours and rushed the new controller now I for one love all Nexgen’s but people need to stop choosing sides the only reason you say you hate it is because you want it.

    Wii: Motion Sensor
    Xbox 360: Live
    PS3: Graphics

I really wish they would just make one ultimate console but that will never happen people think Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo are all competing but to tell you the truth they all get together once a year a make their systems different so that people buy more than 1 so my advice to you one is enough you’ll have played all the good games for all the systems within a year

First of all, they probably had a way to make it work before they got sued. Second, the Wii has a more advanced motion sensor and rumble. Third, where did you even hear that?

  2. [...] I don’t know if you’ve been following the news this past year, but Sony’s been in a lot of trouble. It started with the rootkit scandal late last year and has escalated from there. The PS3 was delayed, Dual-Shock was removed from the PS3 controller, the Wii controller was copied, the Cell processor was revealed to have extremely low yields, PS3’s announced price was expensive, Bluray’s DRM caused a delay in Bluray’s release, and Sony was caught faking a Bluray presentation. And now, Sony has yet another issue on their hand: exploding batteries. [...]
