How Do You Get Your News?

I had interesting experience yesterday. I was sitting in the break room of my work, reading the latest news on my cell phone, when I noticed something in front of me. It was the day’s local newspaper. Once I saw that, I felt pretty stupid. Here I was reading news from Google News Mobile on a tiny cell phone screen when I could have been reading a full-size newspaper.

That experience made me think, have I become so in-tune with the internet that I forget conventional media exists? When I get my news nowadays, I don’t look for a newspaper or the television, I look online. It’s not that I don’t trust conventional media, because half the time the stuff online is the same stuff you find offline, it’s just I find online news more convenient. The news online is instant, it’s easy to sort through, and the majority of the time discussion exists with it. I just don’t get that from conventional media.

So, am I alone? Has the majority of the internet become oblivious to conventional news sources? I suspect I’m not the only one who has switched to total online reliance, but then again, I’ve been known to be the odd one out.

I get my news VIA RSS Feed (The BCC & The Times of India). So, just like you I’m completely online. Except, I read the newspapers on weekends and watch BBC World and NDTV off and on. But most of the time it’s the web.

The only reason why I don’t like newspapers is that they get ink all over my hands and they waste paper. The local paper will usually have better articles than the online syndicated news sources.

It’s also not a bad idea to listen to the NPR podcast. I listen to NPR anyway so maybe I’ll start to doing that. I tried using bloglines but it confused me. I’m not much of an RSS person.

Also by the the time it gets published and edited on print news paper, you’ve had read it already a day or two earlier on google news, or other online news outlets. i’ll read traditional papers while at a doctors office (but usually magazines). I find online is better but i wouldn’t have wasted minutes for a small screen if there was a newspaper in front of me.

i used to be a big fan of computer magazines but i find they are so outdated there is no point. just the reviews are good, especially because they are more trusted than online sites. though customer reviews are a plus, but i still find favourable and negative reviews even before products get out, so i am wary of online reviews on that front. but the point is, by the time it’s published, it’s already yesterdays news. so…there it is. my two pence.

The only news I don’t get online is typically local, and that is because I watch the morning/evening local news broadcasts almost every day. Besides I find the amount of local news online to be sorely lacking at the moment.

Online news is great for national, world, and tech news, EXCEPT breaking news stories…there is really no substitute for live video there.

where i live nothing happens locally so i dont care. i dont even read the local rag with the exception the police blotter every so often to see what kind of petty crimes the children are being arrested for these days. we do have our local paper on the web but i hardly ever read it. but i try to watch the evening news nightly to see whats happening.

I get my News online only, because nowadays I don’t have so much time to take it in convencional medias. College and job take all my time. Ok, sometimes i try watch the evening news at dinner. Ah, I almost forgot, weekly news I read real magazines.

Yeah, but once our internet pipes get fast enough, live video won’t be a problem online. Of course, the live video will most likely be the same thing as the TV broadcast, but that’s besides the point.

i rather not even watch it, i mean i rather read it and be done, i can read an article rather quickly, skim the stuff i dont care about. the news/media tends to sensationalise stuff…esp the hurricane stuff. i mean i am in NJ so when/if the storm does come up the coast, it will be nothing more than a drizzle. i cant stand reporters anymore. a good article by the BBC is usually my favourite choice. plus no adverts since the BBC licensing Fee takes care of that
