Selling Some Things…

With the upcoming purchase of a MacBook, I’m going to be selling a few things that will be replaced by the upcoming purchase. I’m going to be selling my Hackintosh, and my 60GB 4th Gen iPod Photo. With a real Mac I’ll no longer have a need for my test box, and the free iPod nano offer is going to replace my current iPod (although I may apply the credit to a bigger iPod).

I’ll start with the iPod. My iPod is a 60GB 4th Generation iPod photo (color screen). Included with the purchase will be all accessories that came with the iPod, as well as my Carbon iSkin. I will also throw in my modified dock (to fit the larger size of the iSkin), as well as my iPod remote. Asking price is $200, with the buyer paying all shipping.

My Hackintosh is certainly a computer to lust over. If you’re interested in running OSx86, or just want a good Windows/Linux box, this is the computer for you. As far as OSx86 goes, this computer is 100% compatible. It will run with full graphics acceleration, including Quartz Extreme and Core Image. As far as speed goes, I’ve never had any issues with it. This machine will tackle anything I throw at it. If you’re interested in more information about OSx86 and this machine, feel free to contact me about it.

The computer’s specs are as follows:

  • ASRock P4DUAL-915GL Motherboard
  • Intel Celeron D 325 (2.5GHz)
  • Mushkin Enhanced 1GB PC3200 RAM (2×512MB)
  • Seagate 40GB Hard Drive
  • Samsung DVD-ROM
  • Sparkle 400W Power Supply

Asking price is $350, with buyer paying all shipping. Keep in mind, I’m not going to ship or take your money until after I receive my MacBook. I need to copy all of my data off of it first to the MacBook, and in addition I can’t live without OS X until then. Contacting me regarding this purchase will only reserve the computer until I receive my MacBook. I expect the MacBook by the end of June.

To contact me regarding either of these purchases, use my contact form. Feel free to ask any questions about either of these purchases.

Regarding PayPal and waiting for it being safe to ship, NEVER EVER assume that once someone has paid for something via PayPal and the funds hits your that the money is yours to keep! I made the mistake of sending a Sony Vaio laptop that was sold on ebay once the fund hit my PayPal account, only to find out less than six hours later that PayPal seized the funds due to a fraudulent credit card being used in the transaction. WOW, this was quite a shock for me. I sent the sold item in accordance with ebays regulations and then PayPal turns around and tells me I have lost the money.

In short I lost my laptop and neither ebay or PayPal would respond to my emails (by the way, ebay owns PayPal!). The kicker is that I was even charged the fees for selling the laptop on ebay! Simply salt to open wounds! I started to do some research on ebay and paypal after my ordeal and I found that there are ongoing investigations by the FBI into ebay and PayPal’s lack of preventative measures towards fraudulent activity. Simply put, ebay and PayPal facilitate international fraud and take no (financial) responsibility when it occur. In the end, honest people who follow their guidelines pay the price.

Expensive lesson that I hope you don’t have to experience yourself!

Lesson: Never EVER send and item sold on ebay until you have transfered the money from your PayPal account into your bank account and you know it safely there!

Thanks for the warning aberstan. I will surely consider your advice, but I also try to only deal with trustworthy people. I avoid eBay and sell on sites such as Broadband Reports. However, it can’t hurt to remain precautions.

  1. [...] I have a feeling I’m stepping into nooby territory, but I’ll take a shot at this. As you may recall, I’m in the process of selling my Hackintosh and iPod. Well, today I finally sealed the deal on the iPod, and began the process of payment and shipping. As I waited patiently for the PayPal money to arrive, signaling it was safe to ship, I got an interesting message from PayPal. It said I needed to upgrade to a Premier account to receive the funds the buyer was sending. Apparently personal accounts can’t receive money from credit card sources, which is why I needed to upgrade. [...]
