July 2006 Header: To Infinity and Beyond!

If the weather holds up, at 3:49 PM EDT today space shuttle Discovery will begin its accent toward space for a twelve day mission. This will be the second space shuttle flight since the loss of Columbia, and it will be this mission which will decide the future of the shuttle program. During the twelve days in space, the STS-121 crew will perform tests on the safety of the shuttle, and will deliver supplies and cargo to the International Space Station.

That shuttle mission is what’s on my mind this month, and I thought it would make the perfect header. On the left side of the header you’ll see the shuttle tiles, a vital component to the future of the shuttle program. On the right you’ll see an astronaut doing something, the first thing which comes to most of our minds when we think of the space shuttle. The combination of those two items in my mind makes the perfect header, so I hope you enjoy it this month as much as I will.

I have often wondered why it is always Discovery which has these high profile ‘return to space’ launches. It always seems to be the shuttle they simply trust the most not to mess up.

I think it is an excellent choice. Good luck Discovery!
