Google Talk to Work With Skype

There’s some great news for both Google Talk and Skype users tonight. Google has signed an agreement with eBay, allowing Google Talk and Skype to power voice and text conversations between customers and merchants. That means both Skype and GTalk users will be able to communicate with each other. A huge win for Google and users in general.

This also has an interesting side effect. In essence, Google will now have a Talk client for both Mac and Linux. Previously, Mac and Linux users could use GTalk through Jabber, however there was no way to voice chat. Once GTalk and Skype are linked, users of alternative operating systems will be able to download the Skype client to instantly communicate with GTalk users.

No word yet on when the two services will be linked. If it’s anything like the partnership between AOL and Google over AIM, it could be a while. However, my gut instinct is this will go through rather quickly, since both eBay and Google are benefiting.

I’m hoping this goes faster than AIM. Since combining Skype AND Google Talk will definitely improve the userbase.
