Better iTunes 7 Sorting

If you’re using iTunes 7’s new Cover Flow view in Artist sorting mode, you’ll probably notice several repeated album covers for compilation albums. Thankfully, there is a new sorting feature to take care of this problem. Click and hold your mouse over the Album heading. After a few seconds, release and you’ll see a new Album by Artist heading. Repeating this step brings up Album by Year, then plain old Album again.

Sort Album by Artist in iTunes

This Album by Artist sorting mode arranges your list by artist, but groups any CD which contains multiple artists. This not only makes Cover Flow work as intended, but it also makes your library look a lot nicer. Happy sorting!

havent played with the apple version yet but it is pretty damn good on Windows. i finally found an ogg plugin that works well with Quicktime 7. i can finally import the rest of my music. before i was against iTunes for general music and loved winamp and didnt know what to do about it when i switched, im starting to love itunes now and now my music can go with me! though i do wish it was in ogg, i dont care anymore.

I spoke too soon. For some reason, this still isn’t fixing some of my albums with various artists.

Make sure the various artist albums are marked as compilations. If that doesn’t work, edit the Album Artist tag to something like Various Artists.

How do I get album art that Apple can’t find?

Try looking at Amazon, and coping the images.

    @Johnathan -
http://www.slothradio.com/covers/ + Wikipedia = heaven. I just did my whole library.

@Ronald - Thanks, that worked. I knew that compilation check would come in handy some time.

Also, while I’m thinking of iTunes, is there a way to have two sepereate copies of itunes running at once? I want one to be my main library of music and the other to house a specific lot of music that I don’t wish to have in the main library.

go to art4itunes.com if you export your music library it will find all of the album artwork and its real easy to drag right into itunes. i had album artwork using this far before itunes had an easy way to get it.

Could someone tell me why we can’t sort playlists by song, by moving songs up and down the list in iTunes? Y’know, like in Winamp! I want to be able to put my favorites at the front of the line, and go down from there. Know what I mean? But in iTunes, all you can do is sort by artist or title. What can I do?Please email me. mrmorals@telus.net

Mike click the very far left column which has no title. There should be numbers in that column. When you start sorting by the column you can manually drag songs around.

Also, for example, if theres a cd cover that apple cant find but i have it, how do i copy it so it will show, withouth having to get the artwork off apple?

im using a mac, and i updated to itunes 7 and now the bands that start with numbers such as 3rd bass, and 69 eyes are at the bottom instead of the top. And no i dont have it set so that it goes from z-a. Is this something i did on accident or is just itunes?

astroglide, I believe it’s just iTunes. I looked at my list and numbers are at the bottom also.

When you have an album (such as Beastie Boys “Hello Nasty”) which features other artists, iTunes will by default sort those tracks separately creating repeat album art in Cover Flow mode.

To remedy this, right click on the tracks that cause the repeat album art (in this case “Dr. Lee, PhD”) and “Get Info”

Then click the “Sorting” tab. In the box for “Sort Artist” type in the album’s artist name (”Beastie Boys” for example). Be sure that “Part of a compilation” is checked on the “Info” tab and click “OK.”

iTunes will then consolidate the album art in Cover Flow mode.
