I’m Not a Next Generation Gamer

The Ring of Death

Well, that lasted long. Tonight, my brother was ending a Halo 2 session when he decided it was time to play Tony Hawk’s Project 8. After ejecting the Halo 2 disc, I happened to pass by while he was inserting Project 8. As the disc slowly closed into drive, I heard a loud grinding noise. Almost as if the game was being run through a shredder. The loud noise was then followed by an unreadable disc error.

Thinking my brother had inserted the game incorrectly, I immediately ejected the drive fearing the worse. To my surprise the disc was intact with no visible scratches. Puzzled by what just went on, I hesitantly inserted a different game. Same thing. A loud grinding noise followed by an unreadable disc error. After a few more tries, I gave up and decided to call Xbox technical support.

In preparation for the call, I moved my 360 to get the serial number. During that move, I literally heard pieces of the DVD drive fall all throughout the 360. I didn’t like that sound, knowing it meant my 360 was going in for repair. The tech I got was nice, albeit a heavy foreign ascent. After explaining my problem, she instantly put in a request for my 360 repair, and that was that. Maybe fifteen minutes on the phone max. Nothing compared to the wait I must now endure.

I am pissed? Yes. You would think my console could withstand more than a month of play. However, things happen. I just wish Microsoft would have a better build quality on the 360. The console is amazing, it just seems to break on everyone. At least Microsoft has the technical support to make up for it. Now to patiently await my repair box.

Well, they just don’t make them like they used to. That’s kind of hard to believe cause you rarely hear of any computer drives going bad like that. Oh well, sorry to hear about that, gotta find something to do with all your extra time now. Good thing you didn’t beat up your brother.

I feel for you man. I went through 5, yes 5, in less than one month.

That’s the thing. My brother is lucky I was passing by at the time and was able to watch the whole scene unfold myself. Had my brother came to me and told me the 360 wasn’t working, well let’s just say it wouldn’t be a pretty scene.

Since you’ve been through so many, what was your turnaround time for the initial unit?

    That truly sucks man. Truly.

You know what I find interesting? That my original NES still works and has never been restored or repaired. Astounding.

It is good to hear Walter wasn’t to blame. Things like this happen even if excellent QA. It is all a statistical average, take one out of x many and test it. They certainly do a self-test on every unit that is a moment for pass/reject. But they won’t do a burn-in test for each unit. Even though I hate Microsoft, I can’t blame them for this.

PS- I am not going to point out a mistake in your rant… :-P

Ben, my NES is still going strong too. :) Though SMB 3 stopped working, and I broke the A button on the one controller. But yeah.

Yikes, that sucks huge. I’d cry for sure if that happened to me.

I have a bit of a theory that shipping Xbox 360s is wicked bad. Mostly based on the fact that the every person I’ve come into contact with that have had problems, have had them shipped. My Mom deals with UPS on a daily basis and has told me numerous times that she’s seen them throw packages in the back of the truck, or drop them to the ground while standing in the back.

In any case, it’s truly a tragedy and hope for a speedy turnaround for you. Man, and just when Lost Planet is released too.

Your theory may be right, except I usually have no problems with anything else I receive shipped. The 360 might just have cheap parts that break easier than most electronics during shipping.

BTW, still waiting for the box when Microsoft promised me I would have it on Friday. If I don’t have my shipping box tomorrow Microsoft is going to have one hell of an angry phone call later in the day.

this has just happened to my console!! except theres no red error lights. just grinding noises and unreadable disc errors. the worst part, i live in New Zealand, and im prety sure we dont have a microsucks tech centre here. so 17 days might be a dream. i feel the grips of emo kid sliding in on my life. a dark despair once beaten of by the bright and rightous glow of HD goodness.
