Reader Decision: Drop Media Temple?

Let’s get right to the point. Media Temple’s Grid-Server is a piece of crap. It’s slow and goes down often. While I have been able to withstand being Dugg multiple times, I also haven’t been able to withstand my traffic at its normal level. This has left me frustrated and wondering what to do.

While I certainly know what’s happening at my site, I’m wondering if my readers do. Have you ever tried to visit my site when its down? Has it ever taken forever to load? Does this occur often and for long periods of time? Is it bad enough that you think I should be switching hosts?

While my site certainly isn’t a democracy, I would still appreciate this feedback. It will help me decide if action needs to be taken on my part to make your viewing experience more pleasurable. If you have just a moment to chime in, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

I keep track of your site through RSS, so I have not noticed any downtime. However I have read horror stories abut Media Temple in the past few months, especially from MattBrett.com. Are you a blogger who is “In partnership with media temple?”

I also read via RSS, rarely viewing the actual site, so I have not noticed any problems either.

Glad to hear my site’s been fine for you guys. My feed is through FeedBurner, so that probably isn’t affected at all when my site is going through extreme periods of slowness like today.

Everything Matt has talked about has happened to me, basically at the same time. What sucks about the Grid is now when one server is having problems everyone has problems.

Also, yes I am an (mt) partner. It’s a shame because when I partnered with (mt) they had such a great hosting service. Now they’re just letting it fall to pieces.

I hear webfaction is good and can attest to them, but their control panel is over my head. Though, I think that’s me.

I think it’s crap. And yes, there have been times when your site’s been down, Ron. It’s the same with Glenn Wolsey’s blog. I keep telling him to switch. The grid server thing sucks. And honestly, I like Media Temple because I’m a 9rules member and all.

I really think you should switch.

And Ron, I’m glad you started publishing full posts in your RSS feed. I like reading in NewsFire.

Well I don’t keep track of your site in a RSS reader. And I can say many times your site takes forever to load. While my site hits are sporadic, its happened a majority of the time.

I find it so ironic that after I posted this my site has been down 90% of the time. Well, don’t worry. I’m dealing with the issue now.

The site does appear to be slower than usual I’ve noticed as well. I don’t know if it is drastic enough to switch, but I deal with my hosts short comings only because it is hosted for free and I really have zero content now.

Well I changed my mind. You should definitely change. It took over two minutes for my last comment to even post!

Yes. I am friends with the owner of my hosting company. He actually started a new company that pretty much does dedicated stuff now, so the shared people don’t get the good network connections…

So Kyle, I assume you’re experiencing “intermittent latency” issues also. Kind of hard to consider it intermittent since it’s been going on all day now and (mt) has yet to fix it. Well good luck getting your site working.

Ah, okay. I had something like that going too.

In case anyone wonders, yes I did move back to (mt). They’re working on fixing grid, so things will slowly get better. By March they should be perfect. I’m just going to wait it out a bit longer. I still have faith.

Wish you all the best. Diggin’ your own grave I tell you…
Those of us without a blog don’t get free hosting…

Over 6 hours of downtime in less than 20 days. Nothing
but non-responsive tech support. 24 hour turnarounds
on submitted tickets, with one-liner answers and links
to KB articles that do not apply.

I guess upholding the MT MYTH is the 10th rule in the
9 rules network? I picked MT because if was on the
9 rules site(s). I’ve regretted it every day. This weekend
    I’m canceling.

PS The ’solved’ problem of ‘intermittent SQL issues’ is
    back again… nothing but lies…

  22. 22 Ronald Heft on Jan 23, 2007 at 1:24 am (Quote):

John, yes the downtime is ridiculous, but I have faith it won’t go on much longer. It basically can’t go on much longer or (mt)’s name is trashed.

Also, yes my site was just down a few minutes ago, but you know what? I called (mt) and they got it up and running quickly.

There is light at the end of tunnel, or at least I hope so. (mt) has been great for all these years. They’re not going to let go of that now.

Just letting you know, your site loads godawful slow now. I don’t know if you switched hosts or not, but I think you need to do something about it.

  25. 25 Ronald Heft on Jan 30, 2007 at 11:28 am (Quote):

Yeah, I know. I’m still on Media Temple. They promised me they’ll have their act together by March at the latest, so we’ll see what happens.

  26. 26 lololol on Feb 16, 2007 at 9:24 am (Quote):

Media Temple will promise you anything under the sun that they think you want to hear, and that will keep you paying your bill.

And I am so tired of seeing Media Temple employees trying to save face on all these blogs. do you know that between blowing customers off and playing warcraft (they call this “tech support” fyi) they are actually told to go to message boards and blogs and do damage control.

March will come and go and the same abysmal customer service will continue, and the same complete clusterfuck of a grid will still be barely operational.

Looks like you’ll have to go somewhere else if you want SLOW webhosting with terrible customer service aka Media Temple..

lololol, I’ve been happy since I switched back. No outages so far, just a couple of minor slowdowns. I agree with (mt) that the MySQL container should fix things. I’ve noticed the slowdowns are directly related to MySQL and once that’s able to run efficiently there should be no problem.

and in the meantime you will continue to pay full price to get flawed and broken service. if you have halfway decent service you must have VPS. the grid is a clusterfuck

We’ve had our site (Defrost Network) hosted with (mt) for about three years now. It’s been relatively stable and secure. About a month ago we started having problems with email and our sites started to take forever to load. I’m still working with their support staff to hopefully solve the problem. I’d hate to change hosts as we have quite a few sites and DB’s hosted with (mt) and it’s a real pain in the ass to migrate.

    Common (mt)! Pull it together.

    Hello there Ronald,

Can you post an update about (mt)’s performance so far? I’m thinking on switching from DreamHost to it, but with so many issues still pending…

    cheers!

  33. 33 Ronald Heft on Apr 1, 2007 at 11:57 pm (Quote):

Sure. Since switching back, I’ve only had one incident of unexpected downtime and it lasted only a few hours. There were a couple of other downtimes that my site experienced, but they were all planned updates and lasted only an hour or two overnight. I’ve been very happy with my decision to switch back and have not experienced anything to the magnitude of pre-switch.

The only remaining issue I have is with MySQL. Every once in a while it acts strangely. Thankfully, within the next week Media Temple is launching the MySQL containers which will solve all MySQL problems. Once that occurs I think the Grid will be perfect.
